Becoming a National Merit Scholar starts with taking the PSAT/NMSQT (PreliminarySAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) which is a standardized test to introduce the SAT. The scores from this test are used to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program. A student must place in the top 1% of the state on this test to be a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholar. Only JUNIOR year scores will count towards the National Merit Scholarship Program, but you can take it as a sophomore for practice. The PSAT/NMSQT is optional and open to juniors and sophomores.
